Walbridge picks police chief

WALBRIDGE – The village’s new police chief has experience that encompasses law enforcement, nature, civic
duty and a little fun.
Kenneth Frost was hired by council at Wednesday’s meeting at a $47,000 annual salary. His start date will
be announced after he takes psychological and physical exams.
Kathy Heldt, chairwoman of the safety and criminal justice committee, said she was impressed with Frost
for many reasons, including his college background and "fresh ideas."
"His education. He has completed his master’s. His visions for the community. His experience. The
way he presented himself in the interviews," she said after the meeting.
Frost, who is 37, declined to discuss in detail his plans for the department. He said he wants to better
understand resources and the community’s needs before making any changes.
He said, however, that he’s thrilled with the new job.
"I think that it’s the right fit for me. I think I can provide a service to this community,"
Frost said.
His current job is safety service coordinator/chief of police for the Sandusky County Park District,
based in Fremont. Before that he was a Fremont police officer.
He started his law enforcement career at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky.
Frost has assisted with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and flooding in Findlay.
With the parks, Frost said he deals with many of the same police issues as he did in municipal service,
just in a different setting.
"Law enforcement is law enforcement," he said.
Frost has two degrees from Tiffin University, a bachelor’s in criminal justice administration and a
master’s in homeland security administration.
Fremont is currently his home, but Frost may try to locate in the Walbridge area. Council does not have a
residence requirement for the police chief.
The search for a full-time chief started in August and eight candidates initially applied.
Council’s safety committee was assisted in the search by Lake Township
Police Chief Mark Hummer, Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn and
Northwood Police Chief Tom Cairl.
Heldt said Frost consistently scored the highest with all the committee members in evaluation criteria.

It’s been eight years since Walbridge has had a full-time police chief. The last time the village had a
search for a full-time chief was in February 2009 after Don Hendren quit. That search had also been
narrowed to two candidates when it was called off and Tylicki was made acting, part-time chief. He was
paid $22.95 an hour.
Tylicki plans to stay on as a part-time officer in Walbridge.
Walbridge has had a revolving door of chiefs over the years. They include Tim Villa who was hired in May
2000 with most of council not knowing that he had been fired from the Walbridge police force in 1978.
That fall Villa quit Walbridge with a $21,000 settlement.
Other chiefs were Debra North and Lance Martin. Hendren was hired in 2005 after Martin resigned.
