Perrysburg’s strong second half beats Southview (1-29-11)

SYLVANIA — It was a tale of two halves for Perrysburg Friday night.
The Yellow Jacket boys responded from a tentative first half, coming back twice in the second to eke out
an important 53-51 win at Southview.
Perrysburg kept its slim Northern Lakes League title hopes alive, improving to 9-5 overall and 8-2 in the
NLL. Bowling Green is still two games ahead of the ’Jackets in the loss column.
The Cougars, who came into the game in third place in the NLL, dropped to 8-6, 6-3.
“It was a great environment, a big away game in the NLL,” Perrysburg coach Dave Boyce said. “It took a
lot of character just to hang in there and keep coming back one more time, one more time … It’s got to
be a confidence builder.”
Closing out a wild fourth quarter, Perrysburg’s Kevin Schenk hit the second of two free throws to give
the ’Jackets a 52-51 lead with 11.9 seconds left. Southview then had a chance to take the lead back but
missed two free throws with 5.9 seconds remaining.
Perrysburg’s Devon Dunbar grabbed the rebound off the second missed free throw and then after being
fouled hit 1-of-2 from the line to put the ’Jackets up 53-51.
Southview had the last possession with 4.2 seconds left, but Allen Gant’s 3-pointer just missed as time
expired.
“We got off to a slow start … but at halftime the coaches brought us together and we all looked each
other in the eye and said, ‘We’re going to get this done,’” said Schenk, who finished with a team-high
19 points, including 10 in the third quarter.
“Then we went and played to win,” Schenk added. “This game really brought us together and we’re on the
same page right now. We’re never out of a game.”
Perrysburg committed 12 turnovers in the first half and trailed Southview 25-20 at halftime. The ’Jackets
shot 53 percent (8-of-15) from the floor in the first half, but the turnovers resulted in wasted
possessions.
The ’Jackets responded to start the second half, out-scoring Southview 20-9 in the third quarter and only
committing one turnover.
“We talked about at halftime that we didn’t think that was the effort that we were capable of and that we
were not playing to win,” Boyce said. “We were hoping that (Southview) would not play well and it wasn’t
going to get done playing that way.”
The ’Jackets built their largest lead to 43-36 after a Karter Sell 3-pointer with 7:09 in the fourth
quarter, but Southview responded with a 13-0 run and led 49-43 with 3:37 left after a De’Nard Pinckney
triple.
Perrysburg answered again with a three and a layup from Matt Schimmoeller to cut the lead to 49-48 with
just under two minutes left in the game. A Southview 10-second violation gave the ’Jackets the ball
back, then Schenk hit a huge three that gave Perrysburg the lead at 51-49 with 1:09 remaining.
“(Schenk) certainly kept us in the game there for a while,” said Boyce of his senior guard. “He got a
little tired and we gave him a break and he came back in the fourth quarter and had his legs back under
him and made a couple big ones down the stretch.”
Junior forward Jake Pfleghaar added 13 points for the ’Jackets, nine of which came in the first half.
Schimmoeller added four assists for Perrysburg, which got 32 combined points from Schenk and Pfleghaar.

Gant led all players with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Perrysburg finished with 19 turnovers, while Southview committed 17. The ’Jackets made 17-of-26 (65
percent) free throws, including a 12-of-15 mark in the third quarter when the Cougars were called for
nine team fouls.
Next for Perrysburg is a home NLL game with Northview next Friday.
“If we didn’t win, we were out. It’s huge,” Schenk said. “We’re still in the (NLL) race now and need a
little help, but if we keep winning that’s all we can do.”
Southview won the junior varsity game, 41-40. Dan Johnston led the ’Jackets with 13 points.
