TOLEDO — Joe Jakubowski picked a great time to come out of his slump.
In the six previous games before the Tuesday matchup with arch-rival Toledo, Bowling Green’s senior
point-guard had struggled and was losing playing time to sophomore Jordon Crawford. In those six games
Jakubowski scored just four points.
Against Toledo he surpassed that total with his first two baskets, nailing 3-pointers against Toledo’s
zone.
Jakubowski finished with a season-high 16 points, hitting 4-of-7 3-pointers, and going 4-of-4 from the
free-throw line and adding four assists and two steals in Bowling Green’s 70-64 win. In BG’s first 19
games this season, Jakubowski had been in double figures only three times.
“A little bit personally my confidence was going down,” Jakubowski said after the recent rough stretch.
“You just have to play through it, you have to keep playing. The good thing is that we were winning, we
were playing really well.
“To be honest with you, I don’t know,” Jakubowski answered what made the difference in his performance
against Toledo. “You just go out there and play and react. I really can’t explain it.”
BG head coach Louis Orr was pleased to see the veteran of more than 100 starts come up with a big game.

“He played like a senior today,” Orr said. “I thought he was great. In the first half he hit big threes
… Through the body of the game I thought Joe was outstanding.”
Jakubowski played in UT’s Savage Arena about 30 times during his high school career with Toledo St.
John’s.
“It was great to come back and play in this arena. It brought back old memories,” Jakubowski said.
THOMAS: Scott Thomas continues to provide solid play for the Falcons. Going into the game against Toledo,
Thomas was the only player in the Mid-American Conference to rank in the top 10 in the league in both
assists and rebounds. He ranks in the top five in the MAC in rebounds, steals, defensive rebounds and
minutes played.
Against Toledo, Thomas played 38 minutes and finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists, a
blocked shot, a steal and only one turnover. Thomas has scored in double figures in six straight games
since being shutout at St. Louis on Jan. 1.
THREE STRAIGHT: The Falcons have now won three straight games over Toledo.
LEAHY: Zack Leahy, a graduate of Rossford High School, played 23 minutes for Toledo, scoring nine points
and added two assists and two steals with one turnover before fouling out, Leahy was 3-of-4 on
3-pointers, including a triple he made from well beyond the arc, right in front of the BG bench.
TIE ONE ONE The Toledo coaches wore bow ties as a Tie One On effort against cancer. Bowling Green donated
$500 to the Toledo effort before the game.
“I thought that was a class act by their coaching staff, by their institution,” UT head coach Tod
Kowalczyk said. “I told Louie (Orr) before the game I would like to see this become a tradition.
“Football teams have all these jugs and peace pipes and all that stuff. Maybe this can our tradition with
Bowling Green and Toledo raising money for great causes.”
NEXT: Bowling Green, now 9-11 overall and 4-2 in the MAC, with two road wins, hosts Eastern Michigan
Saturday with tipoff at 3 p.m.
