Falcon hockey taking break to recharge

Bowling Green’s hockey team is taking two days off this week to recharge.
The Falcons are idle this weekend after going 1-5 in their six games since the Christmas break, including
5-1, 3-1 losses last weekend at No. 12 Miami.
BG was tied or held a lead in the third period in three of the five losses and played well in the second
loss against Miami.
BG, 7-17-2 overall and last in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association with a 2-14-2 record, returns to
action Jan. 28-29 against Lake Superior.
"We’ve probably played better hockey than our record, but our record is what it is," BG coach
Chris Bergeron said of the last six games.
BG took Monday and Tuesday off and resumes its regular practice schedule today.
"I thought two days off right now would be welcome," Bergeron said. "I really feel like
getting back to work physically, and yelling and screaming wasn’t the right thing to do. We’ve been
through a tough stretch since the break."
VISELLI: Bergeron said freshman forward Ryan Viselli is almost back to 100 percent after being hit from
behind into the boards at Miami.
He’s expected to return to practice by Monday and should play against Lake Superior.
POWERLESS: One of the major reasons BG is next-to last nationally in goals scored (2.0) is its
ineffective power play.
BG hasn’t scored a power-play goal in its last five games and has just 12 power-play goals in 124
attempts (9.7 percent).
"We have not had enough (offensive) zone time to allow us time to get enough pucks on the opponents
net from the start of the year until now," Bergeron said, adding BG has had to break the puck out
of its own zone 10 times on some power plays. "That comes down to intensity and mentality. We need
to be better at that."
Harvard (1.93 gpg) is the only one of the 58 schools nationally scoring fewer goals than BG. The BG power
play is 56th, ahead of only Providence (8.2 percent) and Bentley (6.7 percent).
