Herman E. Swope, 92, passed away on Oct. 24, 2009 in San Diego, California.
Born in Jerry City, Ohio on Sept. 16, 1917 to Guy and Faye Swope, he is survived by his wife Evelyn of 69
years; a son Karl, a granddaughter, Amber, and is predeceased by son James; brother Ralph, sister Neva,
a half sister Janice and two cousins.
Graduated from Cygnet High School in 1935, enlisted in the US Army as a Private. Commissioned as a 2nd
Lt. in 1942, served with the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II as an Artillery Officer. He saw
battle in North Africa, Sicily, Holland, and the Battle of the Bulge. He parachuted into Holland with
the 82nd Airborne Division. He was awarded with two Bronze Stars, European Theater Service Metal with
Silver Star, Bronze Star and Arrowhead; He has numerous other awards and commendations. He also served
in Korea and Vietnam. He retired as a Lt. Col. with a Regular Army Commission on April 1966 with 30
years service to his country.
Internment will be at Fort Rosecrans National Military Cemetery in San Diego, California with full
Military Honors.
