Elmwood FFA’s dairy teams fare well at district contests

Elmwood FFA’s Dairy Foods team ranked second in the recent district career development event held in
Edgerton. The chapter’s Dairy Cattle team ranked fifth in the district contest.
In the dairy foods contest Elmwood was led by Jessica McKenzie, who ranked third individually.
Interestingly, the chapter had five of the top seven individuals.
Following close behind McKenzie was Josh Nutter in fourth, Robert Sigler in fifth, Travis Gonyer in
sixth, and Conlan Varty in seventh. Other members included Mitch Emmitt, Brittany Grilliot, Zach Aurand,
Trevor Tyson, Trey Marsh, Reid Rothenbuhler, Isaiah Lundquest, Josh Boes, Jordan Franks, Caleb Reynolds,
Kayleb Stuff, and Richard McBrien.
Dairy foods contestants identified cheeses, assessed milk samples, distinguished between artificial and
real dairy products, evaluated milker units, completed a written test, and conducted California Mastitis
tests.
In the dairy cattle contest, contestants evaluated classes of cows and heifers, ranked pedigrees, placed
a class of sires, completed a written test, and assigned linear ratings to individual animals.
In this event Elmwood was led by Shelby George who ranked fourth individually. Other top placements for
the chapter included Amanda Peters in 32nd, with Thom In’t Groen placing 47th. Other members of the team
included Matt Reynolds, Justin Barndt, Brook Davies, Brittany George, Isaac Shaffer, and Samantha
Peters.
