Falcon hockey guaranteed tie, shootout to be decided

OMAHA, Neb. — Bowling Green thought it had posted a 4-3 shootout victory Friday night over
Nebraska-Omaha.
But about 45 minutes after the game when they were on the bus outside the arena, the Falcons learned the
game had been suspended in a 3-3 tie.
The Falcons won the best-of-3 shootout 1-0 with Jordan Samuels-Thomas scoring on BG’s second attempt. BG
still has one attempt left since UNO went first in the shootout and failed on all three of its tries.

But under NCAA rules, Samuels-Thomas shouldn’t have been allowed to compete in the shootout since he was
in the penalty box at the end of the 5-minute overtime.
UNO’s Matt Ambroz was called for charging with 16 seconds left in overtime, and BG’s Samuels-Thomas and
UNO’s Eddie DelGrosso then were penalized for roughing after the whistle.
Samuels-Thomas was allowed to participate in the shootout by referees Steve McInchak and Derek Berkebile.
They realized their mistake after the game and refused to sign the official scoresheet. They then called
Central Collegiate Hockey Association director of officiating Steve Piotrowski, who later spoke with
commissioner Tom Anastos.
BG coach Dennis Williams said a decision on the situation will be made by 10:30 this morning.
Regardless of the decision, the game will count as a tie for each team. The shootout winner gets one more
point.
BG is 0-4-1 overall, while UNO is 3-0-2. The game was the CCHA opener for both teams.
“We weren’t trying to do anything illegal,” Williams said, adding he didn’t realize Samuel-Thomas was in
the penalty box.
Williams said the confusion on the bench came because he had called a timeout immediately after the
penalties to diagram a play because BG was going on the power play with a faceoff in the UNO zone.
After the overtime, there is a three-minute overtime during which time the coaching staff has to decide
on its three shooters before giving those names to the refrees.
The Mavericks tied the game on Rich Purslow’s extra-attacker goal with just 52 seconds left in
regulation.
UNO had failed to score with a 6-on-4 advantage after a BG penalty with 3:55 left and with goalie John
Faulkner on the bench for the sixth attacker.
BG gained the tie, although it was out-shot by a 46-20 margin. BG freshman goalie Andrew Hammond was
outstanding with 43 saves, despite having severe cramps from the warm environment at the Qwest Center.
He made 32 saves during the first two periods.
“Our goaltender was terrific,” Williams said. “Not a lot of the saves he made were high-end, grade A
shots. He was seeing the puck really well and smothering the rebounds. He was the best player on the
ice.”
The Falcons scored twice in the third period for a 2-1 lead. Samuel-Thomas, a freshman, tied the game on
the power play at 1:40 and Nathan Pageau gave BG the lead at 8:56.
“We’re happy with the tie, but we want the two points,” Williams said. “Our guys really responded in the
third period.”
Bryan Potacco scored the other BG goal.
The goals were the first of the career for freshmen Samuels-Thomas and Pageau, and sophomore Potacco.
The series concludes tonight at 9:05.
