TOLEDO – The Junior League of Toledo and Owens Illinois will host the fourth annual Kids in the Kitchen
on Saturday. This free event will be held at the Seagate Centre, Hall C, 401 Jefferson Ave., from 10
a.m. until 2 p.m.
The first 500 children in attendance (ranging from 5 to 12 years old) will receive a goody bag, a free
lunch provided by Panera and raffle entry for a Wii Fit, bicycles, Mud Hens tickets, and more.
In the past 35 years the number of obese children in America has tripled, with Ohio statistics showing
that 1 in 7 low income, pre-school aged children are obese, and more than 1 in 3 of 10 to 17- year-olds
are considered overweight or obese.
To help combat this epidemic of childhood obesity, Kids in the Kitchen was initiated by the Association
of Junior Leagues International, to empower kids and their parents about healthy eating, hands-on
cooking and food preparation activities, and how to take these tips back home for use in their own
kitchens.
Children and families who attend Kids in the Kitchen will learn about creating good tasting, healthy
meals with the help of chefs from Penta Culinary Arts School. In addition, Kids in the Kitchen will
feature a variety of educational booths and activity areas, sponsored by local businesses and
organizations, each designed to teach children about nutrition and exercise in a fun and exciting way.
Children can also take part in turbo kick, exercise, and dance activities.
Junior League membership is open to all women in the Greater Toledo area.
