Nancy Hummer

Nancy Garner Hummer, age 85, of Perrysburg Township, Ohio, passed away peacefully with loved ones by her
side on July 12, 2009 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg.
Nancy was born on April 3, 1924 in New Albany, Indiana to her beloved parents Dr. William H. and Mary
Cavanaugh Garner.
Nancy graduated from St. Mary’s College in South Bend, Indiana and moved to Toledo in 1928 after her
marriage to Donal Hummer the same year. Donal and Nancy were married for 35 years and she is survived by
her children, Mary Clare (Michael) Hummer-Decker, William (Claudia) Hummer, Suzanne (Peter) Havens,
Donal (Beth) Hummer Jr., and E. Mark (Laura) Hummer.
Nancy was the proud grandmother to 14 grandchildren, Nancy (Brandon) Simons, Kate (Greg) Gamwell,
Elizabeth Decker, William (Lauren) and Brett Hummer, Justin Brandon and Dillon Havens, Jake and Natalie
Hummer and Hannah, Nick, Elise and Bea Hummer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dr. William Garner Jr., as well as her husband Donal.

Nancy was an avid reader, writer, gifted artist and an enthusiastic card player. At the bridge or gin
rummy table she was a preferred partner or feared opponent. She was quite skilled at games and her
talent with words was so strong that she would complete the daily newspaper crossword puzzle with a pen.

As a loving and devoted mother she enjoyed preparing family meals and was an excellent cook. Southern
dished were her specialty and every evening the family gathered in the dining room for a wonderful meal.
She would also prepare a full made to order breakfast for each child before they left for school.
Nancy was a member of All Saint’s Catholic Church in Rossford, Ohio, and a former member of Belmont
Country Club, The Toledo Country Club and The Toledo Club. In her younger cays she was active in the
Junior League of Toledo, Toledo Zoological Society, and 577 Foundation amateur artist guild.
A guest reception will be held at the W. W. Knight Nature Center, East River Road, on Thursday, July 16,
2009 from 4 to 8 p.m. A Christian Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 17, 2009 at All Saint’s
Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. where the family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 a.m.
