We’ve had all manners of modes of transport pass through our area whilst upon cross country treks: horses, century-old automobiles, on foot, bicycles, and even a rickshaw. Now some folks from Australia have raised the bar, deciding to drive 5 tractors across the country, from New York to LA. Their top speed? While following along behind, I hit a max of 25 mph. I’m a pretty patient individual, but I don’t think I could handle that. SEE MORE PHOTOS |
As I had expected, this is what traffic looks like after you back it up for who knows how long when you drive at 30 under. Thankfully, they pulled off to the side of the road to let all these cars go by, but I can only imagine the traffic jams they have and will cause. |
I was impressed, as I had not seen a convertible tractor before. What will they think of next? |
Finally back in its element on country roads, heading to its rendezvous point for the evening. |
I asked one of the guys how he knew how fast he was going, and he smiled and pointed to the dash, if you can call it that. They had cleverly mounted a cycling computer as well as a Garmin GPS, a charming combo of old and new. As a fellow directionally challenged individual, when it comes to navigation, he directed me to the compass, and, with a grin, claimed he tried to just follow the short cheeky gent driving in the front of the pack. |
Unfortunately, only four of the five made it to Perrysburg. According to our reporter Bill Ryan, one of the drivers said the 5th tractor was quite ill and needed some surgery. He claimed that it needed a triple bypass, or, no, let’s make that a quadruple bypass surgery. After all, it’s a four cylinder!" |
