FOSTORIA – Barbara (McCartney) Carlo, 67, of Fostoria, died Friday (June 19, 2009) at her home.
She worked for the American Cancer Society as Seneca County unit director for many years, then became a
volunteer with the ACS and started the Seneca County Relay for Life. Mrs. Carlo had been the chairperson
or co-chairperson for the relay since its conception in 1994.
She was a registered nurse, having received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Ohio State University
in 1964. She also worked at Fostoria Community Hospital as the health ministry coordinator.
Mrs. Carlo was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Fostoria, where she also was an elder and part of
its choir and bell choir. She also served on several church committees.
She was a member of the Girl Scouts of America for more than 50 years, serving as a Girl Scout leader,
unit director, and day camp director.
She was a member of the Lakota PTA, Athletic Boosters, and Music Boosters; and she was president of the
Seneca County Tobacco Opposition and Prevention, for which she presented programs in grade schools
around Seneca County.
She also was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan.
Born May 15, 1942 in Piqua to Newell and Ruth A. (Cullen) McCartney, she married Maurice F.
"Maury" Carlo on Sept. 5, 1964 in Piqua, and he survives.
Also surviving are a son, David, of Lancaster; two daughters, Diane Norris, Westlake,
and Debbie Carlo, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and four grandchildren, Emily and Andrew Carlo, and Austin
and Anika Norris.
The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Rev. Beth Zuehlke will officiate. A committal
service and burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Woodlawn Cemetery, Van Wert.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Mann-Hare-Hoening Funeral Home, Fostoria.
Additional visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
