BGSU’s Spencer drafted in 45th round

Bowling Green State University junior Derek Spencer was taken in the 45th round of the Major League
baseball draft today by Kansas City. He was the 44th pick by the Royals and the 1,352nd player taken
overall.
The Falcon third baseman is currently playing for the Outer Banks Daredeveils in the Coastal Plains
League where he has helped them to first place after having hit home runs in two of his last three
games.
The Clay High School graduate has played a key role in the Falcons winning the Mid-American Conference
regular season and East Division titles each of the last two seasons.
Spencer was a second team All-MAC selection in 2009 after earning first team honors in 2008.
This spring, Spencer hit .385 with 59 RBI and 50 runs scored. He hit 15 home runs and added nine doubles
for a slugging percentage of .688.
Spencer, who helped the Falcons to a team batting average of .345 this season, eighth in the nation, was
ninth in the MAC in batting average, tied for sixth in home runs, seventh in RBI and sixth in slugging
percentage.
Spencer, who hit .423 in league play in 2009, has a career batting average of .379, which is third-best
in school history. His 29 home runs is eighth-best all-time at BG while his 137 career RBI is tied for
seventh all-time.
