PEMBERVILLE – Jean (Borchert) Cornell-Smith, 85, of Pemberville, died Saturday (May 30, 2009) at Hospice
of Northwest Ohio, Toledo.
She worked for many employers including Union Local No. 1138 and Champion Spark Plug. She also operated
Cornell Letter Shop out of her home in south Toledo for many years.
Mrs. Cornell-Smith was a member of New Hope United Methodist for most of her life and Clark Street United
Methodist since 1999.
She was a resident of Otterbein-Portage Valley Retirement Center in Pemberville for the last nine years.
She enjoyed camping and traveling.
She was a 1942 graduate of Libby High School, Toledo.
Her memberships included many lodges over her lifetime: She was a past Noble Grand and a 43-year member
of Southside Cassel Rebekah Lodge 675; a past president of Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant N.3; and
a past Chief Matriarch of Ruel Ladies Encampment Auxiliary.
Born March 1, 1924 in Toledo to George and Arlene (Robeson) Borchert, she married Stephen W. Cornell on
June 30, 1946. He preceded her in death. She married Kenneth Smith in July 1999, and he also has passed
away.
She also was preceded by a brother, Ben Borchert.
Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Fuller and Leitha Sackmann, both of Toledo; two sons, Terry Cornell,
Westerville, and Gary Cornell, also Toledo; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at First Unitarian Church, 3205 Glendale Ave., Toledo, at 4 p.m. Sunday.
