Public works employees wear them, school safety patrols wear them, construction workers, highway workers,
utility workers and crossing guards wear them. They have been part of the British police uniforms for
years. I am referring of course to the reflective jackets for those whose occupations require a high
degree of visibility.
My question is simple. Why, oh, why, is safety clothing not a regular and mandatory part of the law
enforcement officer’s uniform? Our local police wear midnight blue, the highway patrol fog grey and the
sheriff deputies pitch black. The current uniforms blend into the background perfectly. Exactly not what
I would want to wear were I in their shoes during a traffic stop.
I offer these observations to local law enforcement departments as a means of potentially safeguarding
those who put their lives on the line each day.
