Four county teams in state football playoffsCOLUMBUS – Perrysburg, Lake, Eastwood and Northwood
qualified for the state high school football playoffs.The first-round pairings and final computer rankings
were announced Sunday by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.On Friday, sixth-seeded Perrysburg (8-2)
visits third-seeded and 12th-ranked Akron Ellett (10-0) in Division II, No. 8 Lake (8-2) visits No. 1 and
fourth-ranked Caledonia River Valley (10-0) in Division IV and No. 8 Northwood (8-2) visits No. 1 and
eighth-ranked Tinora (9-1) in Division VI.No. 4 Eastwood (8-2) hosts No. 5 Coldwater (8-2) in Division V
Friday. Eastwood is ranked 15th, while Coldwater is seventh.The Friday games are at 7:30, while the Eastwood
game is at 7 p.m.The first-round pairings and final computer rankings are on page 12.Lake playoff tickets on
saleMILLBURY – Lake will be selling tickets in advance for its football playoff game at Caledonia River
Valley Friday at 7:30 p.m.Tickets will be available by Tuesday afternoon. They can be purchased in the
athletic office during school hours.Adults can enter Door No. 18 on the south side of the high school
building. There will also be an evening sale on Thursday from 5-6 in the athletic office.Tickets are $7 in
advance and $9 at the gate.BG Salyer earns All-MAC honorsJason Salyer is the first Bowling Green State
University men’s cross country runner in 18 years to earn first team All-Mid-American Conference
honors.Salyer was sixth Saturday in the MAC championship meet held at BGSU. The top seven runners are
first-team All-MAC.Salyer finished in 25:12.21.As a team, the Falcons were ninth with 228 points. Eastern
Michigan won the meet with 42 points.BG’s other scorers were: Greg Black, 42nd, 26:20.85; Tim Jurick, 70th,
23:37.90; Joe vanBolderen, 71st, 27:44.45; and Jeremy Richard, 74th, 28:09.60.Falcon women finish sixthThe
Bowling Green State University women’s cross country team was sixth in the Mid-American Conference
championship meet. The meet was Saturday at BGSU.The Falcons finished sixth with 156 points. Miami won the
12-team meet with 45 points. It’s BG’s first finish in the top half of the meet since a fifth-place effort
in 2008.BG’s scorers were: Rebecca Rae, 21st, 22:01.61; Andrea Alt, from Perrysburg High School, 27th,
22:15.90; Brittney Darah, 31st, 22:24.50; Amanda Garlak, 34th, 22:28.37; and Rachel Durbin, 47th,
23:03.03.Powers honored at MSUEAST LANSING, Mich. – Caroline Powers, a Bowling Green High School graduate,
was recognized during the Michigan State-Michigan football game for her career accomplishments at MSU.The
most decorated women’s golfer in Michigan State history, Powers was only the second women’s athlete in
Michigan State history to earn the George Alderton Award three times. The award is for the MSU female
athlete of the year.Powers also was named the female winner of the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor and the
recipient of the Chester Brewer Leadership Award. She was the first athlete in MSU history to receive the
Alderton Award, Brewer Award and Conference Medal of Honor in the same year.Named the 2013 Big Ten women’s
golfer of the year, Powers completed her career as the school’s all-time record holder in scoring average
(74.26) and owns the top three single-season scoring averages in program history, including her record 73.53
she set as a sophomore.Powers will be playing in the final stage of the LPGA qualifying school next
month.BGSU volleyball losesKALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan defeated the Bowling Green State University
volleyball team, 25-19, 19-25, 25-14, 25-17 Saturday. The Falcons are 12-12 overall and 8-4 in the MAC with
four conference matches remaining.BG’s leaders were: Paige Penrod, 21 kills, 10 digs; Jelena Sunjic, 13
kills; Danielle Tonyan, 12 kills; Erica Fullenkamp, 47 assists; Ashley Dunn, from Bowling Green High School,
a match-high 23 digs.Falcon swimmers winCINCINNATI – The Bowling Green State University swimming team won 10
events and set two pool records in a 171-89 win over Xavier Saturday.BG’s 400 freestyle relay team of Kayla
Effinger, Erica Nieminen, Maya Skorupski and Victoria Griffin set a pool record, winning in 3:33.61.
Griffin’s 51.43 effort in the 100 freestyle was also a pool record.Other BG winners were: the 200 medley
relay team of Joelle Scheps, Daniela Carrillo, Effinger, and Griffin, 1:48.62; Emily Waller, 200 freestyle,
1:56.93; Kristin Filby, 100 breast stroke, 1:07.76; Effinger, 200 butterfly, 2:14.10; Carmen Young, 200
breast stroke, 2:26.76; Petra Laudova, 500 freestyle, 5:13.22; Hannah Newman, 100 butterfly, 59:08; and
Carrillo, 200 individual medley, 2:11.92.Fillis goes 3-0 for Falcon tennisCINCINNATI – Drew Fillis won all
three of her matches Saturday as the Bowling Green State University tennis team concluded play at the
University of Cincinnati Invitational. No team scores were kept in the four-team meet.Fillis won two singles
matches and one doubles match Saturday. For the weekend, she finished 4-2 overall, while teammates Nikki
Chiricosta and Emily Reuland were each 3-3.
