Tornado confirmed in Michigan; some injuries

KENTWOOD, Mich. (AP) — A severe thunderstorm packing winds estimated at more than 80 mph spawned a tornado, injured at least six people and caused significant damage to homes in western Michigan, officials said Monday, and storms with tornadoes damaged some homes in Iowa.

A fast-moving thunderstorm intensified in Michigan late Sunday over Kentwood, just south of Grand Rapids, the National Weather Service said.

Touching down in Byron Center, the twister traveled just over 6 miles and was 300 to 400 yards wide, according to the weather service website.

Ohio police investigate death of 4-week-old baby

FAIRFIELD, Ohio (AP) — Authorities in southwest Ohio say they are investigating the death of a four-week-old baby after a 911 caller reported that the infant girl was not breathing.

The Fairfield Police Department says firefighters and police officers found the baby, Aubrey Reader, deceased after they responded to the call on Sunday morning.

Man’s body found after rural Ohio pole barn fire

JOHNSVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Firefighters have found a man dead in a pole barn that was destroyed by a blaze along a remote road in rural north-central Ohio.
Johnsville fire Chief Harlan Barrick told the Mansfield News Journal (http://ohne.ws/1qF1QW4 ) Friday that the barn appeared to be used as living quarters and was located next to a mobile home that also burned overnight.

KENTWOOD, Mich. (AP) — A severe thunderstorm packing winds estimated at more than 80 mph injured several people and caused significant damage to homes in western Michigan, prompting flooding Monday, and storms that spawned tornadoes damaged some homes in Iowa.
A Michigan thunderstorm intensified late Sunday over Kentwood, just south of Grand Rapids. The National Weather Service said it’s possible a tornado touched down briefly between 10:20 and 10:30 p.m. National Weather Service crews were surveying the area Monday to determine whether a tornado hit.
“They were pretty fast-moving storms,” T.J. Turnage, a Grand Rapids-based weather service meteorologist, said Monday.

Ohio rape kit DNA tests yield 1,500 hits

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio’s attorney general says an initiative to test previously untested rape kits has led to almost 1,500 hits to DNA profiles in a law enforcement database.
A statement from Attorney General Mike DeWine says just over 8,000 sexual assault kits have been submitted by 140 law enforcement agencies since the program began in 2012. More than 4,100 kits have been tested in the ongoing effort to solve more reported sexual assaults with the help of DNA matches.
