MANSFIELD, Ohio (AP) — Officials have identified a 17-year-old North Carolina boy who drowned in a
northern Ohio pond earlier this week.
The Richland County Coroner’s office identified the teen as William James Dawson. Authorities say he was
visiting from Kings Mountain, North Carolina, and had swam in the pond at his great-grandparents’ house
in Mansfield many times before.
The Mansfield News-Journal (http://ohne.ws/1lP9MjU ) reports he drowned Monday after going underwater and
panicking. His 18-year-old sister, who was swimming with him, tried to rescue him but couldn’t. Divers
found his body in water 18 feet deep.
He’d been in the water about 40 minutes.
