Professor Emeritus Dr. Ronald V. Hartley, 75, of Bowling Green, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2014 after a
four-year valiant fight with melanoma.
Dr. Hartley was born in McArthur, Ohio to the late Clarence and Edna (Brown) Hartley. Dr. Hartley married
Judy Musselman of Danvers, Illinois on June 20, 1965 in the Disciples of Christ Church in Champaign,
Illinois and she survives in Bowling Green.
Also surviving are his children: Karen (Jim) Adams of Perrysburg and Daryl (Kristi) Hartley of Arnold,
Maryland; grandchildren: Mariah, Carter, Andrew, David and Matthew; and a sister: Barbara (James)
Klekner of Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Dr. Hartley completed his undergraduate work and received his Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting from
Ohio University. He attended the University of Illinois where he received his Masters in Accounting
Science and PhD in Accountancy with a minor in Quantitative Economics.
Dr. Hartley started off his teaching career at Illinois as an instructor. He and his wife moved to
Bowling Green in 1965 after accepting a position at BGSU as an accounting instructor. He was proud to
have achieved full professorship during his years at the university. In 1983, Dr. Hartley was made the
Chairman of Accounting and MIS at BGSU and in September of 1990 became the Associate Dean of Graduate
Studies in Business, the position he held until his retirement in 1998.
Dr. Hartley published four books and thirteen articles and also wrote three book reviews. He had four
papers which were presented to professional societies. He was a member of numerous Editorial Review
Boards through out his professional career.
Dr. Hartley was a member of the American Accounting Association, American Institute for Decisions
Sciences and the Financial Executives Institute.
In 1968, he received the first annual Distinguished Teacher in College of Business Administration, an
award given by the Bowling Green State University Parent’s Association. He was elected to the 1970
edition of Outstanding Educators in America and the Phi Kappa Phi of BGSU. Dr. Hartley was nominated for
the Bowling Green State University Master Teacher Award in 1983-1985 as well as in 1987 and 1988.
Ron was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bowling Green and enjoyed working on the
computer and studying genealogy. Ron and Judy enjoyed attending Bowling Green State University Men’s and
Women’s Basketball games (Roll Along!). Ron loved working out in his yard, where his was known to be a
perfectionist, making sure the lawn was groomed and well maintained. Dr. Hartley’s true love was his
family, especially his grandchildren.
Ron would like to thank Dr. William Dillon of Bowling Green, Dr. Christopher Lao of the University of
Michigan and the staff of Bridge Hospice of Bowling Green for the wonderful care he received during his
illness.
Visitation for Dr. Hartley will be on Friday, May 23, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the DECK-HANNEMAN
FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 1460 W. Wooster St., Bowling Green, Ohio 43402, where his funeral
service will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 11 a.m. Pastor Tom Mellott will officiate.
Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Bowling Green, after which a lunch will be served at the
funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions made be made in Dr. Hartley’s honor to the UofM
Multidisciplinary Melanoma Clinic, 11127 Cancer Center, 1500 E. Medical Center Dr. Ann Arbor, MI
48109-5902; First United Methodist Church, 1506 E. Wooster St., Bowling Green, Ohio 43402; or to Bridge
Hospice, 1069 Klotz Rd., Bowling Green, Ohio 43402
