DEFIANCE — The past week just got a whole lot better for Lake baseball. Last Tuesday the Flyers clinched the Northern Buckeye Conference title in a 15-1 win over Rossford, and Saturday night at Defiance High School Lake won the Division III district title by holding off Otsego in a 5-4 victory. PHOTO GALLERY Lake (24-5) will play Bloom-Carroll on Thursday at Elida High School at 5 p.m. “It’s been a very good week,” said Lake head coach Greg Wilker. “We have eight seniors and they just want to keep playing. They’re excited to keep playing. They enjoy being around each other and it shows.” Otsego, which got on the board first, taking a 1-0 after the top of the second inning, never gave in, and the Knights had a chance to come back in the seventh inning.

LUCKEY — By the time Amanda Hotaling started pole vaulting Saturday, the 12 other competitors had already completed their vaults. The North Baltimore senior then came in and shattered the meet record. Hotaling cleared 12-0 to win a Division III district championship and break the previous Eastwood High School district record by nine inches. MEET RESULTS The pole vault championship and meet record were part of a satisfying day for Hotaling, who also finished third in the 100, and helped the Tigers to third-place finishes in both the 800 and 400 relays. By finishing in the top four, all four events advanced to this week’s regional in Tiffin. Hotaling easily eclipsed the previous record of 11-3 set by Lakota’s Cami Wasserman in 2008. Vaulters can join the competition at whatever height they wish and Hotaling opted to start at 11-0. Her previous best of 12-5 came a week ago at the Midland Athletic League championships where she broke the league record. Hotaling easily cleared 11-0 on her second attempt, and then had no problems making 11-6 and 12-0 on her first attempt at each height. She elected not to attempt any additional heights after running the 100, and the two relays. “Today was a really good day,” said Hotaling, already a three-time All-Ohio vaulter. She won the state championship as a freshman in 2009, and has finished second at state the last two seasons. “The district record is something I’ve wanted to break ever since I was a freshman and I finally got it.” Lakota sophomore Cariss Reese finished second at 9-0 and classmate Makayla Kiser was third at 8-8. Vaulters receive three attempts at each height. Had Hotaling not made 11-0, she wouldn’t have advanced. “I felt confident that I would make 11-0,” Hotaling second. “I felt strong and confident with my vaults. I’m starting to head in the right direction and hopefully next week will be even better.” Hotaling cleared 11-0 and then ran the 100 where she finished third in 13.00. She then made her vaults at 11-6 and 12-0 after the 800 relay. Her next attempt at 12-6 would have come after the 400 relay. But with temperatures in the upper 80s and the three races in a short period of time, she decided to call it a day. “I was worried about injurying myself coming back after the 800 relay,” Hotaling said. “It already was a good day, so there was no sense in vaulting any more and risking an injury with the regional next week. It was a little warm and that drew a little more energy out of me during the running events than normal.” But Hotaling said the most satisfying part of her day was helping the two relay teams advance to the regional. The 800 team of seniors Jessica Casey and Jessica Lee, freshman Raegan Fleckner and Hotaling had a time of 1:48.98. The 400 team of Fleckner, Lee, Casey and Hotaling finished in 52.53. “Everyone ran well on the relays and I’m really happy we’re going to the regional in both,” Hotaling said. “The relays mean so much to me because I know the experience of what it’s like to get to Columbus. I want our relays to qualify for state. Our team is a family, and I want them to have that experience, too. It’s such a great time and a great experience at state.”

LUCKEY — Cariss Reese knew she was running well Saturday for simple reason. She didn’t stutter step approaching any of the hurdles. The Lakota sophomore won the 300 low hurdles Saturday during the Division III district track and field meet at Eastwood High School. MEET RESULTS Reese’s first-place finish was one of two for the Raiders, who also won the 400 relay. The top four finishers in each event qualified for next week’s regional in Tiffin. Reese won the 300 lows in 47.20, beating Fremont St. Joseph junior Katie Blohm by 32 one-hundreths of a second. “The race went even better than I thought. I knew there was some tough competition and I’d have to run my best,” said Reese, whose time was her fastest of the season.

TIFFIN — Sometimes even the best strategy can backfire. That was not the case Saturday afternoon for Perrysburg’s softball team in a 4-0 victory over Ashland in the Division I district final at the University of Tiffin. The Yellow Jackets, 19-8 overall, advance to the regional at Clyde High School, facing third-ranked Elyria Thursday at 5 p.m. PHOTO GALLERY After watching Ashland hit the ball hard against Anthony Wayne in the district semifinal, head coach Ryan DeMars decided to have Yellow Jackets’ pitcher Felicia Eisenbrandt go to her off-speed pitches to keep the Arrows off-balance. The strategy worked as Eisenbrandt allowed only five hits, walking one and striking out six. Only two runners reached third base for the Arrows. “We threw more curveballs than normal. It just worked out for us,” DeMars said. “Felicia did an excellent job working with the game plan ... She was definitely on today.”
