Saddles N’ SurreysSaddles N’ Surreys is a 4-H Club that mostly shows horses at the Wood County
Fair. The club had its first official meeting Thursday. Members decided as of this year to make individual
committees for different topics, for instance; barn and both, social, community service, programming (guest
speakers), etc. to help the club run more smoothly and accomplish more. The club also decided to do something
for the community, as those attending discussed several ideas for community service projects. Members are
considering church food donations, the Stranahan Theatre project called Noel, where they can help hand out
presents to the needy at Christmas time, Project Hope which is an organization that uses therapy for
children through horses, and the Wood County Humane society needs cleaning supplies and their dogs walked.
The club will choose several of these projects throughout the year. Those in attendance talked about programs
kids could try other than 4-H, as well. Members were encouraged to participate in STEM camp. STEM is a
program at BGSU for hands on experiences in science, technology, engineering, and math. Another good
experience available to those in the club is Horse Bowl, where participants learn about the anatomy, proper
nutrition, conformation, etc. of a horse. Then they compete against other counties at state and go on to
national competition if ther team gets first place. Another opportunity that was brought up was 4-H
Leadership Board where someone can do community service, talk to guest speakers, and other fun
activities. That was what was discussed at the club’s first official meeting this year.
