BGSU hockey loses as Ferris evens best-of-3 series (3-10-12)

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Second-ranked Ferris State evened its Central Collegiate Hockey
Association quarterfinal series against Bowling Green Saturday night, posting a
7-4 victory.
The Bulldogs scored four straight goals in the third period to pull away from a 3-3
tie and force a third and deciding game Sunday night at 7:05.
Ferris played well and held a 42-21 edge in shots, but BG stayed close and gained the
3-3 tie on Dan DeSalvo’s goal 21 seconds into the third period.
The Bulldogs, however, responded with their four goals to earn the victory.
Bonis’ second goal of the game snapped the tie at 6:09, with the other goals coming
from Matthew Kirzinger short-handed at 8:08, Andy Huff at 15:39 and Derek Graham
at 17:07.
The Falcons had far too many mistakes and turnovers.
“The third period was basically a snap shot of what the whole game was — it was too
loose with the puck and getting beat pretty much to every loose puck, just not
the way we want to play the game,” BG coach Chris Bergeron said.
Bonis totaled two goals and two assists, while Graham had two goals and one assist.

Ferris, the CCHA’s regular-season champion, is 23-10-5. BG is 13-23-5.
“Full marks to Ferris,” Bergeron said. “They were a desperate team, the more
desperate team. They got exactly what they deserved tonight.”
DeSalvo finished with two goals and one assist for BG, while Connor Kucera and Jake
Sloat had the other goals. Kucera’s goal was the first for the freshman
defenseman.
Carpenter had two assists.
Special teams also were a big factor. The Bulldogs were 1-of-6 on the power play and
scored a second goal just three seconds after a BG penalty ended. BG’s power
play, despite having some good chances, was 0-of-4 and allowed the short-handed
goal.
BG’s Andrew Hammond stopped 34-of-40 shots in 55:39 before leaving with 4:21 left.

Hammond appeared to be hurt as he was at the bottom of a goalmouth pileup.
He skated off the ice and was replaced by Scott Zacharias, who played for just the
third time this season and the first time since Dec. 30.
But Bergeron said Hammond was “fine” after the game.
