Is there a gardener on the gift list this holiday season?

Selecting a fresh cut Christmas tree has become the highlight of the holiday season for many families. Spending the day at your favorite “cut-your-own” Christmas tree farm, or shopping at a Christmas tree sales lot creates memories for families that last a lifetime.

Our homes are buttoned down for the winter. Screens have been replaced with storm windows, caulking around the house completed, and the weekend of Nov. 19 we had our first hard freeze. Temperatures dropped to the teens and daytime temperatures struggled to reach the freezing point.

This past week, the Ohio State University Extension office of Wood County received several calls and emails about yards being destroyed overnight.

Wood County has a rich railroad history. Most of our cities and villages at one time had a railroad depot. We had many railroad lines crisscrossing our county. As the county progressed, the old railways were abandoned leaving behind old, gravelly, railroad beds of soil.

This past week on one of our breezy days, the cover blew off the grill. Of course, it was not the wind’s fault, more like mine as my wife said — what did you expect if you did not fasten it down? So, out the back door I went to chase down the grill cover across the neighborhood.

Tomato season is ending, the fall weather is upon us, and our first frost normally occurs the second week of October. Halloween is coming, and it is jack-o’-lantern season.

I heard a news report that the Spotted Lanternfly was sighted in Port Clinton in early September. This is a concern for grape producers as these planthoppers have been reported to feed on wild and domestic grapes. They also feed on hops, fruit trees, willows and various hardwood trees, pines, shrubs and vines.
