MILLBURY – Three organizations have pledged $300,000 toward the Lake School District’s upkeep of the
stadium field turf and the all-weather track.
At Wednesday’s meeting, Lake Board of Education President Tim Krugh announced a collaboration to plan for
the resurfacing of the turf and track.
Donating $100,000 each toward the approximate $400,000 costs are the Lake Athletic Boosters, Lake
Athletic Department and Lake Turf and Track Fundraising Committee. The pledges are for $10,000 each, per
year over 10 years.
The Lake BOE is also promising $100,000 from the permanent improvement fund, which is funded through a
levy.
The collaboration "significantly takes a burden off taxpayers," Krugh said.
The all-weather track was built in 2003 as part of the middle school bond issue project. The stadium
field turf was installed in the summer of 2010, after the June tornado destroyed the high school, and
was paid for by Traveler’s Insurance Co.
The track needs to be resurfaced every six to eight years, and the cost is expected to be between $40,000
and $70,000. It’s already been redone once, Krugh said.
The stadium field turf will need resurfacing in about 10 years, at a $200,000 to $400,000 cost.
Krugh said that the costs of maintaining and repairing the former crushed stone track and natural grass
stadium field were $15,000 to $20,000 a year.
The athletic surfaces have been a fantastic addition to Lake, he said.
"The amount of use we get on both is incredible. We are playing and practicing baseball and softball
in the spring, and soccer games and soccer practices," Krugh said.
There is also football and track, and heavy use by middle school students. The former surfaces couldn’t
be used as much because they would wear so easily, he said.
The board unanimously approved the plan. Brad Delventhal was absent.
Also at the meeting, the board:
• Accepted the retirement resignation of third-grade teacher Debbie Bosl, effective at the end of the
school year.
• Accepted donations of 30 Chrome books valued at $8,100 from the Lake Education Organization, popcorn
bags from the athletic boosters and an alumni book and CD from the Walbridge Centennial Committee.
• Went into an executive session to discuss employment, compensation and investigation of
charges/complaints for an employee or official. No action was taken.
