Otsego Mathcounts advances to state

TONTOGANY – Nearly 140 students from 19 schools participated in the Mathcounts regional competition this
month at the University of Toledo.
The 2014 Otsego team included: Hailey Asmus, Braeden Murphy, Devin McKee, Josh Shawberry, Hunter
Martinez-Buehrer, Jordyn Lenox, Joseph McQuillin, Felicity Jinnings, Evan Farley, Andrew Richardson, and
Luke Beach.
The Otsego team receives funding from the Otsego Endowment Foundation in order to pay for participating
in the competition.
The competition requires participants to work as individuals and at times as a team to accomplish
engineering, probability, algebra, geometry, and logic problems that are written at a high level. There
is a round where a calculator is permitted and another round when it is not and participants must rely
on mental math ability. The third round that takes place on stage in front of all participants and is a
Jeopardy style face-off between the top 16 students in the competition.
The top 10 students move on to the state competition in Columbus.
The team finished eight and Braeden Murphy as an individual finished eighth place and he also advanced to
the state level of the competition.
