Vaccines urged amid central Ohio mumps outbreak

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The state Department of Health is
urging residents to make sure they’re properly vaccinated as an outbreak
of mumps continues to grow in central Ohio.
The agency says
residents who haven’t had two doses of measles-mumps-rubella, known as
MMR, are considered to be at high risk of getting mumps.
Health
officials for Columbus and surrounding Franklin County say 119 cases of
the viral illness have been confirmed, with 95 of those linked to Ohio
State University. Neighboring Delaware County says 10 suspected cases
there haven’t yet been confirmed.
Mumps often starts with fever,
fatigue and body aches. Those infected are urged to stay home for a few
days, cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing, and
frequently wash their hands.
