COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Columbus Fire Department has added an ambulance retrofitted to help safely
transport obese patients weighing more than 650 pounds.
The department added ramps and a pulley system to a rescue unit to create its new Medical Support Unit
19.
Special Operations Battalion Chief Jim Davis said Monday the department is doing patients and staff a
disservice if it isn’t prepared for larger community residents.
The department used a $30,000 grant from the Central Ohio Trauma System to retrofit the unit.
The ambulance will be available to communities outside Columbus for emergency assistance when needed.
