On Monday, the neonatal unit at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo, will receive a generous gift
from area 4-H club members.
More than a dozen members of the 4-H Quilters and other volunteers will deliver roughly 60 baby quilts
which the hospital can use for its tiniest patients.
Many of those quilts were on display this past week in the Junior Fair Building during the Wood County
Fair.
The special quilts will also be shown this week at the annual Pemberville Free Fair.
The 4-H club, now in its sixth year, boasts 40 members and growing. Jenny Morlock serves as the club’s
adviser.
The club is also assisted with the generosity of time donated by Joanne Kessen and Rita Trumbull , both
master sewing volunteers, through Ohio State University Extension program.
While delivering the quilts, the 4-H contingent will also be given the opportunity to tour the neonatal
unit where the quilts will be used and given to the families of the babies who are treated there.
Members of the club will also be doing some sewing in the Pemberville American Legion Hall on Thursday
from 7 to 9 p.m. at the village’s fair.
The club has received national attention for their efforts and are now cooperating with the state in
developing the first 4-H project book on quilting.
"It was very good to see so many of the 4-H booths (at the county fair) had quilts in them,"
Morlock said.
In part, because of the local club’s efforts, the state 4-H is now creating project books for quilting
with the assistance of Morlock and the local 4-H Quilters club.
