Farm to Fair: Part four

Liz Hirzel and
her animals are no exception. Hirzel is taking two market lambs and one market steer to this year’s
fair. Brody, her steer, gets rinsed every day in and effort to assure his coat has the best look when he
is judged at the fair. Perhaps sensing his ultimate fate, Hirzel said, “Brody’s been acting up a lot
lately.” As a market steer he will be sold at the fair and sent to slaughter. Despite that
inevitability, Hirzel has bonded with the animal as she has cared for him in preparation for the
upcoming show and sale. “It’s important that I build a relationship with him and build that trust,”
Hirzel said. “He will respond better (in the show arena) if we have developed a trust and relationship.”
