Sarkan is the author of “And Candy Smiled,” a Caldecott Award nominee, and the sequel, “And Candy Lived.”

Sarkan was a teacher from Bowling Green for 35 years, and currently lives in Grand Rapids, She comes from a family of artists with her grandparents being professors and song writers and her parents being teachers and musicians. She has always had a passion for writing, music, history and art.

Since the age of 6, she always wanted to write children’s books, and in partnership with author Emily Christoff-Flowers, she finally achieved that dream and began writing about her English springer spaniel dog, Candy.

Her newest book, “Aunt Mary’s Pottery,” is about a potter named Mary Grabill who was an established artist in Florida and made her life creating pottery, despite her issues with arthritis and polio.
