Drexl joins BGSU as director of volleyball operations

Bowling Green State University head volleyball coach Danijela Tomic has announced the hiring of Sean Drexl as director of volleyball operations and head club volleyball coach.

Drexl joins the staff of the Falcons after spending the 2022 season as an assistant coach at Presbyterian College of the Big South Conference.

“We are thrilled to have Sean on our staff,” said Tomic. “He was highly recommended by the previous two head coaches he worked with and other people we talked to. What impressed me about Sean from our first conversation was his eagerness to learn, communication skills, and also his focus on relationships, values that are at the core of our team’s culture. Besides organizational skills that are a must for his role as a director of operations, Sean brings a wealth of playing experience. He will be able to step on the court not just as a coach but also as an excellent volleyball player when needed.”

Drexl arrives in Bowling Green with two years of coaching experience at the Division I level, spending the 2022 season as an assistant coach at Presbyterian College and the 2021 season as a volunteer assistant coach at Georgia Southern. With Presbyterian, Drexl assisted the Blue Hose to a 9-19 record with a 5-11 conference standing before serving as interim head coach for a month following the season. As for his season with Georgia Southern, Drexl and the Eagles finished the season 17-11 with a 9-7 conference record in the Sun Belt.

“I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity extended to me by Coach Tomic,” Drexl said. “Her innate curiosity to learn and connect has spread like wildfire amongst the program. The environment is contagiously genuine and I am incredibly eager to grow within the championship culture created by BGVB staff and athletes alike.”

Drexl’s coaching career began as the U16 head coach for MVP Academy, a boys volleyball club in Florida. Drexl held the position each summer from 2018-21 while playing collegiately for the University of Charleston. At Charleston, Drexl was a libero from 2017-21 and earned All-Conference EIVA Second Team honors at the conclusion of his senior season in 2021. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. He also served as a student manager for the girls’ volleyball program at his high school alma mater, Monarch High School, from 2013-17.
