2 transported by air ambulance after US 6 crash

Two drivers were taken by air ambulance after a Monday crash on U.S. 6.

The Wood County Sheriff’s Office responded to the three-vehicle crash at 1:50 p.m.

Herman Schmenk, 87, Ottawa, was driving a 1996 Freightliner westbound on Route 6. He was hauling a trailer full of lime.

Elizabeth Hamada, 52, Weston, was driving a 2014 Subaru Forester directly in front of Schmenk. She slowed to make a left turn onto Van Tassel Road and was rear-ended by the Freightliner. The Subaru was pushed across the center lane into oncoming traffic.

Hamada was struck by Angela Stevens, 57, Napoleon, who was operating a 2010 Hyundai Tucson eastbound on Route 6.

The three drivers were extricated by mechanical means.

Hamada had suspected serious injuries and was transported by Life Flight to Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo.

Stevens also had suspected serious injuries and was taken by ProMedica Air to Toledo Hospital.

Schmenk suffered suspected minor injuries and was taken by Weston EMS to Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center. He was cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead.

Two passengers in Stevens’ vehicle, one 29 years old and one 4 years old, suffered suspected minor injuries and were taken by BG Medic 2 to Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center.

All were wearing seatbelts; the child was in a booster seat in the back seat.

The roadway was shut down for approximately four hours while towing and cleanup was completed.
