BG Arts Council presents ‘An evening with Janet Ballweg’

Join the Bowling Green Arts Council for the third talk in its new speaker series “An Evening With…” on Friday from 6-8 p.m., at Myla Marcus Winery, 133 S. Main St., when Janet Ballweg discusses “Artist Residencies.”

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Ballweg’s remarks will begin around 6:30 p.m. and last approximately 20 minutes, with a brief Q&A to follow.

“I have participated in a number of artist residencies in the U.S. and abroad. Each residency was unique in the way it was structured, what it offered, and how it benefited me,” Ballweg said. “I’d like to share some thoughts based on those experiences, including why artists attend residency programs, what to expect, how to choose a residency, and tips on applying to residencies. My hope is that other artists will consider the possibility of a residency for their own work.”

Ballweg’s studio practice focuses on constructions of memory and the domestic experience through the use of integrated digital and traditional printmaking technologies. Exhibited in over 500 exhibitions across the U.S. and abroad, Ballweg’s work has won numerous awards, including an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award. She has been awarded residencies including at the Guanlan Printmaking Base in Guanlan, China, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and Brush Creek Ranch in Saratoga, Wyoming.

Ballweg earned a BS in Art from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MFA from the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana. She is a professor of art at Bowling Green State University, where she heads the printmaking program. More information is available at janetballweg.com.

“This new series for the arts community in Bowling Green has been well received,” said Robin Gerrow, president of the BGAC. “Janet’s talk will be a great opportunity for artists to learn some of the nuts and bolts of applying for residencies to further their artistic journey.”

The BGAC is a volunteer organization working with local artists, arts organizations, and supporters to provide inspiration, enjoyment, and learning opportunities in the Bowling Green community. More information can be found at bgartscouncil.com.
