An escapee died hours after being apprehended Friday and taken to jail.

At approximately 10:34 p.m., Wood County deputies found Dakota Embry, 24, unresponsive in his cell. Deputies started and continued CPR until paramedics arrived.

EMS pronounced Embry deceased and his body was transported to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for autopsy and toxicology tests.

Embry was arrested at 5:10 p.m. Friday after escaping the NorthWest Community Corrections Center located on East Gypsy Lane Road.

Embry, of Bryan, and Justin Firman, 36, of Deshler, escaped Thursday evening after jumping the fence. They were apprehended Friday in Fostoria.

While Embry was not on a suicide watch, personnel were checking on him every 10 minutes, Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn said Monday morning.

“He was fine on one of the rounds and the next time they checked on him, he was unconscious,” he said.

Embry was sentenced to the NWCC program after violating community control sanctions imposed in Henry County after he was convicted of possession of a fentanyl-related compound.

Firman was indicted in March 2022 for abduction and domestic violence. He was sentenced in January to three years on community control with 90 days in jail followed by completion of the SEARCH program at the NWCCC.

There are no cameras in the cells but jail staff checked camera footage to see who came and went near Embry’s cell, Wasylyshyn said.

He said there was no indication of foul play, and it did not look like Embry took his own life.
