Republicans are holding our country hostage

To the Editor:

What in the world is going on in our country?

We have the Republican party black-mailing the country with a failure to raise the debt ceiling unless there are spending cuts to social programs — a blackmail package that could send the country into recession simply in order to pay off their deep-pockets donors.

This amounts to bribes to the Republicans to do what the donors want: lower taxes so the donors can have more money to support their extravagant lifestyles.

Whatever happened to paying one’s fair share of taxes?

Republicans will call these bribes by another name: campaign contributions. But they really are bribes. And thanks to the stacked Supreme Court, dark money can flow into Republican coffers without any of us knowing how much or from whom the money came. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. How much money do Republicans need?

The Supreme Court is supposed to protect us from possible evil actions of the government, to keep laws fair and just. But this Supreme Court is loaded with grifters who espouse the Republican point of view. The current Supreme Court has betrayed its calling and is no longer worthy of its title.

We have elections coming up. If we want to save our Democratic Republic, we need to vote all of the Republicans out of office, get rid of gerrymandering and stop voter suppression. Since all Republicans understand is power and money, this is the only thing that will get their attention. And it starts right now — in August.
