Luella Louise Henning, 86, of Bairdstown, passed away at 11;25 a.m., Monday, March 6, 2023, at Birchaven Village, Findlay, where she had been living. Previously she lived in Bairdstown all of her life, where she served very proudly on Village Council for several years.

In Bairdstown, on a bright sunny day on June 16, 1936, Virgil F. and Eileen L. (Barringer) Nungester welcomed their first beautiful baby girl Luella Louise. Followed by siblings: Larry, Phyllis (Kerr), Vivian (Hackworth) and Kevin. Luella graduated Salutatorian from Bloomdale High School in 1953.

On July 26, 1957, Luella married William “Bill” Henning, and he preceded her in death in May of 1984. She is also survived by her four children: Jocelyn “Josie” (Ira) Landis of Lima, David Henning of Bairdstown, Steven (Judy Deal) Henning of Findlay and Gary Henning of Findlay; grandsons: Michael A.C. Christie, Pete Kitchen, Thomas (Andrea Bowman) Crook, Eric Henning and Justin (Angela Starkey) Henning; great-grandchildren: Amyia Henning, Phoenix Henning, Phaith Henning, Phelyx Henning, Dylan Crook and Nolan Crook; sisters-in-law, Pat Nungester and Mary Nungester; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, siblings, granddaughter, Sarah Lee Henning, and great-grandson, Phinn David Henning.

In the summer of 2009, Luella and Jocelyn went on a girls vacation to Canada to see Luella’s oldest grandson, this was her first time on an airplane. She said, “She could take it or leave it.” Luella never was on an airplane again. She was a day caregiver for many wonderful children over the years. She cared for Craig and Josh Barringer for so many years, she became like their 3rd grandma. Luella still talks about Nick Robinson, and has never forgotten Shelley Simon or Hayden and Josh Rose. She had also been a caregiver for LaDonna Hummell for a few years.

If you haven’t guessed it yet, Luella helped write her own obituary, she said, “I don’t want a boring obituary.” Luella had a kind heart and good sense of humor (ornery). She will be missed by all that knew her.

The family would like to thank the Birchaven staff for their care of Luella, and an extra special thank you to Creighton Dialysis Center.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 13, 2023, at Smith-Crates Funeral Home, North Baltimore. Burial will be in Weaver Cemetery, Bloom Township. Per Luella’s request please wear jeans and your favorite shirt to the service.

Visitation will be held from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, at Smith-Crates Funeral Home.
