Bowling Green State University announced Sunday in a press release that they fired head men’s basketball coach Michael Huger after 8 seasons with the school.

Huger was a student athlete at BGSU from 1989-93 where he was a two-time all-MAC selection and runner-up MAC player of the year.

On behalf of BGSU Athletics, Derek van der Merwe, director of athletics, issued the following statement regarding the termination of Michael Huger’s contract:

“We are extremely appreciative of Coach Michael Huger’s contributions and commitment to Men’s Basketball at Bowling Green State University over the last eight years. As a former student-athlete of the program, he has brought meaningful and extensive perspective to the head coaching position and has positively impacted the lives of student-athletes. We are deeply grateful for Michael’s service to his alma mater.

BGSU Men’s Basketball has received significant financial support from its donors over the years and competes in one of the best facilities in the Mid-American Conference – the Stroh Center. It is well poised to be a leading basketball program nationally. BGSU will launch a national search immediately to place our next head coach for Men’s Basketball.

We wish Coach Huger the very best in the next chapter of his career.”

*BACKGROUND AND PROCESS*

BGSU remains focused on its recruitment of a leader who will position the program for a strong future and has partnered with Collegiate Sports Associates (CSA) to place its next Men’s Basketball head coach in the coming weeks.

Per the contract with Coach Huger, termination without cause obligates the University to pay him in an amount equal to his annual base salary, exclusive of benefits and incentives, for the balance of the current contract (March 31, 2025).

Coach Huger is obligated to undertake reasonable and diligent efforts to obtain comparable employment as soon as reasonably possible to reduce the amount owed by the University.
