A former Bowling Green State University football standout was arrested early Sunday on a drug trafficking
charge in the downtown area.
Bowling Green Police report that Jerry “Boo Boo” Gates, 22, BG, was arrested at the Community Commons
area in the 100 block of East Wooster.
Police reportedly observed Gates make what was described as a “hand-to-hand” drug deal with another man,
Laurence J. Blackful Illinois, 22, Joliet, Illinois.
Gates was approached by officers and allegedly admitted to the incident. He was arrested for trafficking
in marijuana. The marijuana and $30 were seized in the incident.
He was listed as an inmate at the Wood County jail this morning and was being held without bail.
Blackful was cited for possession of marijuana.
Gates, a senior defensive player for the Falcons, helped lead the team to their recent Mid-American
Conference Championship and a berth in the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl. He was named an athlete of the
year at the university’s annual athletics honors night last month.
BGSU Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Communications Jason Knavel said this morning that they had
only recently learned of the incident and were “still working through it.”
He said that Gates, as a senior whose eligibility has ended, is technically no longer with the team and
is a general student preparing to graduate.
