PEMBERVILLE – Otterbein Portage Valley Retirement Community is about to offer a nine-week course for
bridge players looking to improve their game. It is open to OPV residents and the general public alike.

Instructor Bill Ryan will teach "Defense in the 21st Century" which involves weekly lessons in
playing better defense. Statistics show a player will be on defense twice as often as they will be the
declarer. Ryan, a Silver Life master with the ACBL will take bridge players through opening leads,
second and third hand play, defensive signaling, interference of declarer and developing defensive
tricks. The ninth lesson will focus on the negative double.
Ryan will also provide all students with one free play at the Perrysburg Duplicate Bridge Club, which he
operates.
Each lesson will last 90 minutes but spirited discussion by students may extend each session to two
hours. There is a $40 charge for the nine lessons, which includes a learners manual. Registration is
required to Jaime at 419-833-8917.
Otterbein’s five full-service retirement communities in western and northern Ohio are located in
Pemberville, Lebanon, St. Marys, Cridersville, and on Lake Erie’s Marblehead Peninsula. Otterbein also
