SYLVANIA — Caroline Powers saw some improvement over her first round performance in the Marathon Classic,
but couldn’t weather an off day on the greens.
The 23-year-old shot a 2-over-par 73 Friday and a 6-over-par 148 for the tournament.
The Bowling Green High School graduate totaled two birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey during the
second round.
Powers missed the cut. A score of 1-over 141 was needed to play the final 36 holes at Highland Meadows.

“The two days were so different,” Powers said. “Yesterday, I was putting pretty well, but I was hitting
the ball very poorly. Today I was hitting the ball well, but wasn’t making any putts. And you can’t
score very low with either of those combinations.”
Powers got off to a slow start as she bogeyed two of her first three holes.
However, she birdied No. 13 on her fourth hole of the day to get back to one over. And then she rattled
off nine straight pars, with a few rimming off the edge of the hole.
“I was close all day,” she said. “You see a couple of those go in and the hole starts to look a little
bit bigger. But they just weren’t falling today and some days that’s the case.”
Overall, Powers was pleased that at least a few of her shots that just missed came off good shots.
She described her overall round as simply “unfortunate” after producing four fewer bogeys than the first
round.
“I hit the ball really well tee to green and I had a lot more good birdie chances today than yesterday,
but the putts just weren’t rolling in today. I just skimmed a lot of edges and had a few lip outs, but
they just weren’t finding the bottom.”
Powers added she definitely struck the ball better during the second round, which helped lead to a strong
finish as the had a birdie and a par on the final two holes. Her final hole added to her tally of shots
that just rimmed out, as well.
“The last one looked good for a long time,” she said. “It was too little too late, so it didn’t really
matter. But I feel good about what’s happening. I’m glad I at least improved on yesterday. I know that
the past tournaments I’ve had, the first day is OK. We can still manage after it and then the second day
has been very poor. So, at least I improved a little bit. I still wasn’t able to get under par today,
but you have to make putts to get under par.”
For the second straight day, Powers had a large contingent of family and friends, as well as some of her
sponsors and even her third-grade teacher.
“It was so awesome to see everybody who came out to support me and just to tell me that they’re watching
even when we’re not here,” she said.
Powers leaves for Albany, New York, to play in her next Symetra Tour event, the SEFCU Championship at
Capital Hills.
After that event, she has six more tournaments to close out the season. She must finish in the top 10 to
get her LPGA card or face qualifying school.
“We’ll keep working on things,” she said.
