To the Editor: Student opposes animal testing

0

Animal testing should be stopped. The testing of animals is a raging epidemic, and as a result of this
testing, there are some animal mutations.
There is still too much animal testing going on. There were 50 drugs on the market that were first tested
on animals and approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), then later deemed unsafe.
95 percent of all animals being tested are not covered by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA); this means that
these animals have no rights.
Most animals, if they survive the testing process, are then killed.
During animal testing, mutations are common as the testing process can alter the DNA of the animal. The
most common mutation is extra limbs.
Most people do not know whether a product they use was tested on animals. It is important to read labels
and research the products we use daily. An alternative to animal testing is to grow a patch of human
skin in the laboratory and test on it. New technology has made it possible for human skin cell
duplication.
In conclusion, it is important to stop the abuse of animals for testing of products used by humans. There
are other alternatives to animal testing, and we should seek to utilize them. We must stand up for the
rights of all animals.
