To the Editor: Eastwood plan to centralize elementaries misses point

0

It seems to us that the recent presentation to the Eastwood school board regarding the proposed
centralized elementary building really missed the "central" point.
We all want our schools to have good facilities in new/renovated/updated buildings.
The real issue is the location of these facilities. We would like to retain the concept of the
neighborhood elementary schools in Pemberville and Luckey. The neighborhood school is within walking
distance for many kids; the school’s presence in the villages contributes to the strength of the local
economy, the local tax base and, most importantly, to the community’s spirit and identity. And we think
it is absolutely fine to have separate facilities for the younger kids away from a central campus.
Luckey and Pemberville will certainly not be the same communities without their own neighborhood
elementary school. That, in turn, will detract from the entire Eastwood community.
Eastwood voters have repeatedly said "no" to a central elementary building. At the same time,
Eastwood citizens have individually and collectively clearly supported our community through restoration
and renovation of many of our homes and other community buildings and structures.
It is time for our school leadership to take the helm and present plans that restore, renovate and add to
our villages’ school buildings. Let us be the leaders in keeping our villages strong and supportive of
our children, families and our neighborhood community schools!
