To the Editor: County praised for having clean audit

0

Congratulations, Wood County, on the recently conferred "2013 Clean Audit Award"
[Sentinel-Tribune, 11/29/2013.]Was Wood County awarded a "2012 Clean Audit Award" as well?If so,
it would be of interest to see how the half million dollar buyout of a Wood County Educational Service
Center [ESC] employee [who refused to obey the Board’s instructions] was handled in the 2012 audit.
[Sentinel-Tribune, June 1, 2011, article by former Editor David Miller]At the time, then editor David Miller
noted: "It’s time for the [Wood County] ESC board members to do the right thing and resign en masse for
giving away $553,000 of taxpayer dollars without getting anything in return."Surely this squandering of
Wood County ESC taxpayer money was reflected somewhere in the 2012 state audit of Wood County. Or
not.Through the years, Miller stood up for the rights of the little guy. He wasn’t afraid to speak out
against powerful local politicians when he knew it was the right thing to do.With luck, Sentinel-Tribune
journalists, under the paper’s new editorship, will take note of their former editor’s integrity. With luck,
they will be allowed to continue the tradition of determined, unbiased investigative reporting.Sally
