To the Editor: BG man questions varied media coverage of BGSU

0

In last Saturday’s editions of the Sentinel-Tribune and The Blade there appeared stories
covering the same BGSU board of trustees meeting where protesters also attended the meeting. Their
interest was to object to the layoffs (called non-renewals) of contracts for a large number of
instructors.I noticed similarities in the details and in quotes from the stories by David Dupont of the
Sentinel and Nolan Rosenkrans of the Blade. I guess that would be natural, as they were coverage for the
same event. In both stories faculty senate chairman, Sheri Wells-Jensen was quoted about the cut and how
remaining faculty would manage, and using her words, "But we cannot manage cuts to who we
are."The story’s similarities also included were photos of Dave Sennerud and his protest sigh
decrying that president Mazey’s bonus was more than the total he was paid. But there was one quote which
was present in the Blade’s story, but missing from the Sentinel’s. Quoting the Blade: Mazey defended her
bonus Friday as part of her contract if she reached board-set goals, and said she couldn’t refuse to
accept it … Ms. Mazey said she hasn’t considered taking a voluntary pay cut. "Why should I
consider it?" Why indeed? As the University administration is asking so many to sacrifice
financially for the sake of the University, a similar monetary sacrifice on the higher paid
administration’s part might be seen as a gesture of good will by others. But what this Mazey quote says
to me is that there is an attitude of indifference displayed in her words. That The Blade chose to
include the quote in the story is to its credit. It is a very telling quote. Why did the Sentinel choose
to ignore or delete the quote from their story? It may imply that they felt using it might generate ill
will toward the University president, or to form a permanent anti-Mazey bias in our town. But only the
Sentinel can answer that question.David BewleyBowling Green
