PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Fire investigators say a
trash container placed next to a space heater caused the fire that
destroyed part of a western Michigan minor league ballpark.
MLive.com reports (http://bit.ly/1aaljBX )
Plainfield Township Fire Investigator Kyle Svoboda said in a report
released Wednesday that the placement of a Rubbermaid trash container
next to the heater at Fifth Third Ballpark was an accident.
Svoboda
also said the sprinkler system failed to work properly during Friday
morning’s fire. He said in the report that the sprinkler system was
inspected in 2013 and about $50,000 of maintenance work was done in
2012.
Multiple suites were destroyed in the fire and part of the roof collapsed. No one was injured.
The park is home to the West Michigan Whitecaps, a single-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.
