Mom, ex-boyfriend indicted in Ohio toddler’s death

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A woman and her former boyfriend wereindicted Monday in the death of her
toddler whose remains were foundthree months ago after a summer-long search for the girl.A grandjury
indicted the mother, Angela Steinfurth, on a murder charge whilethe former boyfriend, Steven King II,
was indicted on charges ofaggravated murder, tampering with evidence, and abuse of a corpse.Bothhave
been in jail since the summer on charges of obstruction after19-month-old Elaina Steinfurth was reported
missing in early June.Authoritiessearched homes, vacant buildings and the Maumee River near downtown
forany sign of Elaina while volunteers looked through neighborhoods andparks. The girl’s remains were
found in September inside a box in therafters of a garage that belongs to King’s family.DNA tests
confirmed the skeletal remains were of Elaina.AngelaSteinfurth and her two daughters stayed with King at
his family’s homeon June 1, investigators have said. Elaina’s father went to theresidence to pick up his
two daughters the next day, but only Elaina’s4-year-old sister could be found.Investigators have
saidSteinfurth knew Elaina had been seriously injured and didn’t seekmedical help. They would not say
what type of injuries the toddler hador who caused them.Steinfurth has been in jail since mid-June.
Ajudge wouldn’t allow her to leave jail for Elaina’s funeral inSeptember. Her attorney has declined to
comment.King was chargedin July with lying to investigators about the child’s disappearance. Hetold
reporters after his arrest that he is innocent. A message seekingcomment was left for his attorney on
Monday.The county coroner’soffice said in November that Eliana suffered injuries
indicating"non-accidental trauma," and that there were severe, acute fractures tothe girl’s
