INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Two women were found dead inside an
Indianapolis home Friday morning after a gunman was killed in a shootout
with police in the latest bout of violence that’s troubled the city in
recent months, police said.
Other officers found the suspected gunman dead between two houses following the shootout around 7:15 a.m.

Bailey
identified the women as Julia Morrow, 84, and her granddaughter, Inity
Morrow, 30.
Police did not say whether the women were shot. A coroner
will determine their cause of death, police said.
Police
identified the suspect as 36-year-old Quintico Goolsby of Indianapolis.
Police said they are investigating any relationship between him and the
women.
Officers went to the neighborhood on the city’s east side
after a 911 dispatcher heard a woman screaming during a call. Bailey
said the gunman came out a side door of the house as Officer Greg
Milburn approached, and Milburn fatally wounded Goolsby in an exchange
of gunfire. Milburn was struck but the bullet hit his protective vest,
Police Chief Rick Hite said.
Bailey said Milburn is a 12-year
police force veteran. He said Milburn was taken to a hospital in good
condition and was released later Friday morning.
As neighbors and
spectators milled around on the cracked sidewalks outside the yellow
police tape barrier, the Rev. Frank Alexander led a circle of about 25
people in prayer. Hite joined in, holding hands with people beside him.
The
deaths come as the city is on pace to have its deadliest year in at
least eight years, with police reporting 62 homicides including Friday’s
killing.
Numerous squad cars filled the street near the house
where Friday’s shooting happened in a neighborhood of one-story
bungalows, where yards overgrown with bushes and weeds are mixed in with
homes surrounded by carefully tended flower beds. Almost every house
had an iron-grilled security door.
Hite said investigators were working to determine any relationships between the gunman and the women.
"This
is otherwise a peaceful block by all assertions and we want to make
sure that we understand exactly what’s happened," Hite said.
Bailey said investigators didn’t believe anyone else was involved in the women’s deaths.
