Guelph ON – Tom (Thomas) Lee Mooney, 79, also known as Coach Mooney, died Friday June 20th, 2014 at the
Guelph General Hospital.
Tom was born in Portage, Ohio, on July 18th, 1934 to Agnes Gertrude (Scharf), of Portage, and Douglas
Stewart Mooney, of Clare, Michigan.
He was predeceased by his true love Peggy Ann (Howell) from Dayton, Ohio, who passed away from breast
cancer on Aug.18th, 2000. Their ashes will be placed together at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Guelph. He was
also predeceased by his sister June Marie Bechstein and brother Norm Arthur Mooney. His eldest brother
Douglas Eugene Mooney resides in Cleveland.
He is survived by two daughters; Kit (Kathryn) Ruth Mooney of Orton, ON, Robyn Lynn Mooney of White Rock,
BC, and two sons; Tom (Thomas) Lee Mooney of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Doug (Douglas) Stewart Mooney of
Stafford, Virginia, and 15 cherished grandchildren.
Tom’s passionate career was as a coach specializing in football but also involving basketball and
wrestling. He began in Guelph in 1956 at the Ontario Agricultural College as a coach /player for the
Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen. In Montreal he taught at Monklands High School before landing his coaching
position at McGill University where the Redmen teams under his supervision had tremendous success.
Returning to Ontario, Tom was a defensive coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats when they won the Grey Cup
in 1972. He then went on to teach Physical Education at Brock HS in Burlington, Milton HS, and EC Drury
HS in Milton before retiring with Peggy to their dream retreat in Temagami ON.
Tom Mooney’s Celebration of Life will be held on Sat. July 5th, 2014 (1-4 p.m.) at Wall-Custance Funeral
Home, 206 Norfolk St, Guelph ON (1-519-822-0051).
