Dr. Daniel J. Tutolo 1934-2014
Bowling Green State University Professor emeritus Daniel Tutolo, age 79, passed away at Hospice of
Northwest Ohio in Toledo on March 26.
Dan was born August 30, 1934 to the late Felice and Maria Libera (Marra) Tutolo in South Euclid, Ohio.
He received his bachelor of science degree in business in 1957 and his master’s degree in Education in
1963 from Kent State University.
He began his career as a teacher and developed an interest in teaching children to read and encouraging
them to enjoy books. He returned to school and earned his Ph.D. in education from The University of
Akron in 1971.
After teaching at The Ohio State University, Dan joined the faculty of Bowling Green State University as
a professor in 1973 and began a distinguished career of teaching, research, and community service.
In 1981, Dan began to visit schools in Italy to research comparative education, an interest that
continued throughout his lifetime. He was a consummate scholar and educator in the areas of attention,
listening, and play as basic components in literacy.
Dan always sought to connect his teaching to his research and as a result, he was respected, admired, and
beloved by his students and his colleagues. He authored a book entitled "Scuola e Insegnamento
negli USA."
He was a lifetime member of the International Reading Association and was appointed to the Committee on
Doublespeak, a national watchdog group focused on deceptive language in advertising.
Dan retired from BGSU in 1994, but continued teaching until 2011, which marked his 50th year of teaching.
He continued to pursue his passion for travel, visiting Italy yearly to reconnect with family and the
many friends he made while working there.
As a 25-year Hospice volunteer, he enjoyed taking his clients to visit the eagles nest on the river
followed by a stop for ice cream. He founded the men’s cooking club at Stone Ridge Country Club in 2003
with 15 members, a group that continued to grow each year.
Dan formed many enduring friendships through participation in his gourmet, poker, euchre, golf, and
morning coffee group, as well as his daily 9:00 meetings. He was an active member of St. Aloysius Parish
where he was instrumental in founding Wine and Dine, an over-50 social group. He was deeply committed to
social justice and enjoyed his Friday Spirituality group.
Dan was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Josephine Dabney Tutolo; second
wife, Joan George Tutolo; parents; brothers, Giuseppe, Angelo, Anthony and Carl; and sister, Helen.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife and love of his life, Jo Brandon Tutolo; daughters Jean Tutolo
(Sandra Hall), Patty (Tom) Feehan, Beth (Robert) Campbell; stepchildren Mark Brandon and Trisha Brandon
(Darren Taffender); grandchildren Andrew (Colleen), Kelly, Melanie, and Stephen Feehan, Jimmy Lee
Campbell, and Wynne Taffender; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 30 from 1 to 5 at DUNN FUNERAL HOME, located in Bowling Green’s
Historical District at 408 W. Wooster St. A prayer service will be conducted at 4:30 by Deacon Thom
Headley.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church, 150 S. Enterprise St.,
Bowling Green.

Alice Lloyd College, 100 Purpose Rd., Pippa Passes, KY 41844.
