Betty Jean Flynn, 85, of Perrysburg, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at St. Clare Commons in
Perrysburg.
She was born on March 10, 1929 to Frank and Ina (Shoyer) VanVoorhis in Portage, Ohio. Jean married Edwin
Flynn on December 16, 1950 and left the railroad to begin her life’s work: Family First. Raising her
family in both South Toledo and Perrysburg, Jean taught old fashion down to earth values. The kids knew
how to cook and clean and every morning the beds were made and there were no dishes in the sink.
She also had a vegetable garden, where they would can and preserve the vegetables and make ketchup and
noodles.
Once the family was raised, Jean returned to work at the Lucas County Adult Probation Office.
She was a member of the All-Thumbs Garden Club and the Maumee Lady Elks, where she was the 1981 Maumee
Lady Elk of the Year.
Jean was a constant cheerleader for her children and grandchildren. She conquered anything she undertook
with the exception of using her hearing aide. That one she could not master!
Jean is survived by her children, Cathy (Ron) Ecekl, Ann (Jeff) Figmaka, Deanna Flynn, and Martin (Linda)
Flynn; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Brian) Eckel-Hare, Rachel Eckel, Jacob Flynn, and Caitlyn Flynn;
great-granddaughter, Juniper Hare; brother, Emerson VanHorhis; sister, Lois Haberstock; and several
nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Clare Commons for their wonderful care and the friendship
they have provided to Jean’s entire family.
Friends and family will be received on Monday, June 9, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the
Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St., Maumee, Ohio 43537, where funeral services will be
held at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
