PERRYSBURG – Odds are if you follow Perrysburg athletics you recognize the name Allex
Brown.The junior multi-sport athlete has already put together an impressive résumé as a Yellow Jacket.
Highlighting her athletic career thus far are a 2012 girls state soccer title and a trip to the regional
semifinals last season as a member of the girls basketball team.With an impressive list of accomplishments
as a teammate, Brown has added an individual feat – the 6-foot-1 post has committed to play basketball at
Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis."A weight was definitely lifted off of my shoulders
after I made that phone call," said Brown, whose final decision came between offers from IUPUI and
Northern Kentucky University."It was hard, especially to make the call back to Northern Kentucky, but I
just felt right to go to IUPUI," Brown said."One of my biggest things was team chemistry
basketball-wise, not only with the girls, but with the coaches, to make it feel like it’s a second
family," she said. "And I felt that there, especially when I went to watch a game."Brown will
receive a full scholarship from IUPUI, a Division I school that competes in the Summit League. She also
received offers from Valparaiso and Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne.A versatile player who
does not resemble a prototypical post, Brown possesses exceptional rebounding skills and runs the floor with
ease, along with fellow post Sarah Baer.Brown averaged 10.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as a sophomore
coming off the bench. She was Perrysburg’s second leading scorer last season, behind Baer, who has signed to
play at Bowling Green State University next year."She works harder than everybody else … and in games
she plays harder than anybody else on the court," Perrysburg coach Todd Sims said of Brown."One of
the things about her, and about everybody, you have those games that you just don’t play very well, but she
does so many other things that you don’t notice it," Sims continued. "She’ll have a bad shooting
night … but have 14 rebounds and five assists, three blocks, and takes a charge. She’s an all-around player.
She’s not just a scorer."Once attending IUPUI, Brown is interested in studying in the Kelley School of
Business, although she is undecided on a specific major.The Jaguars, coached by Austin Parkinson, who is in
his fourth season, are 9-5 overall this season. They recorded their first 20-win season and made a
postseason appearance (Women’s National Invitational Tournament) last season for the first time since making
the leap from Division II to Division I for the 1998-99 season.Brown said she knew she had decided to pick
IUPUI when she found herself cheering for specific players and calling them by name while attending a game
on a visit.The official commitment came on Dec. 18."I was on speaker phone with three of the
coaches," Brown said. "I was so excited and just kind of came out and said, ‘I would love to play
with you and I’m accepting the offer to play at IUPUI.’ It was crazy. They were screaming and shouting and
they were so excited."Brown, a gifted soccer player as well, leading the ‘Jackets with 17 goals last
fall, has previously received letters of interest from Division I schools. But the option to play soccer
gained no traction as Brown showed no returning interest. The summer following her freshman year, Brown
decided she wanted to pursue college basketball.She will take her official visit to IUPUI sometime in the
spring."I see a lot of what we do (at Perrysburg), out there. And that’s kind of what I like,"
Brown said. "If you can not only have talent as a team, but you can play well together, it just makes
it so much more enjoyable."To know that I could make an impact in their program and create a whole new
family, something outside of Perrysburg … it’s great to look forward to."
